Future Cities Laboratory Global – New Publication on Sustainable Urban Development

How can cities become more liveable, resilient, and future-ready? In our new publication Future Cities Laboratory Global, we present current research findings from our international programme based in Zurich and Singapore – bridging science and planning practice.

We are pleased to announce the release of Future Cities Laboratory Global, a special issue published in collaboration with espazium – The Publisher for Building Culture. The publication offers a comprehensive insight into our international research programme, jointly led by ETH Zurich and the Singapore-ETH Centre.
At FCL Global, we bring together expertise from architecture, urban planning, engineering, social sciences, and environmental studies to tackle the complex challenges of contemporary urbanisation. Our aim is to develop innovative tools and strategies that support the creation of sustainable, adaptable and equitable settlement systems.
This publication features selected outcomes from over a dozen research modules, focusing on themes such as:

  • Urban density and liveability
  • Agropolitan planning strategies in Asia and Europe
  • Circular construction and material cadastres
  • Climate-adaptive, nature-based infrastructure
  • Digital tools for urban analytics and governance

A key element of our work is knowledge transfer. We work closely with planning authorities and public agencies in Zurich, Singapore, Madagascar and beyond – co-developing methods, testing new models, and supporting evidence-based decision-making.

“Knowledge transfer is the key discipline.”
Prof. Sacha Menz, Executive Director FCL Global

The publication appears as a supplement to TEC21, TRACÉS, and Archi (Issue 9/2025) and is available online: external page PDF-File
